In its 2022 final payment rule for ASCs, CMS authorized a nomination process for requesting codes to be added to the ASC Covered Procedures List (ASC-CPL) for 2023 and beyond. Please help ASCA advocate for the expansion of the list of procedures that CMS considers clinically appropriate for ASCs to provide to Medicare beneficiaries by completing a brief survey. ASCA members are asked to take this survey by Friday, February 11, 2022.

Samples from patients in the United States and Kenya show an increasing emergence of previously undetected vancomycin-resistant strains of Clostridioides difficile, sparking concern as recurrences in the treatment of C. difficile infection (CDI) continue to rise. "Our results may help explain a decreasing effectiveness of antibiotic-based therapy in C. difficile infection, since a significant proportion of patients harboring strains with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin may not respond to treatment," report the authors in research published recently in Clinical Infectious Diseases.

JAMA Ophthalmology (01/13/22) Rogerio Garcia Nespolo; Darvin Yi; Emily Cole; et al.
In this cross-sectional study, a region-based convolutional neural network was able to track the pupil and to identify the current surgical phase being performed with a mean area under the receiver operating characteristic curve greater than 95 percent, triggering surgical guidance tools developed with computer vision. These findings suggest that a platform that can be integrated into surgical ophthalmic microscopes can provide real-time audiovisual feedback to the surgeon during cataract surgery, combining deep learning neural networks with custom surgical guidance tools built with computer vision techniques.
