On December 19, federal lawmakers released the text of impending legislation that will fund the federal government for 2023. The sprawling, $1.7 trillion bill contains more than 4,000 pages of text, which outline ongoing funding for federal agencies as well as ad hoc spending for programs such as aid to Ukraine and hurricane disaster relief for Florida and Puerto Rico.

The Joint Commission today announced it is eliminating 168 standards (14 percent) and revising 14 other standards across its accreditation programs to streamline requirements and make them as efficient and impactful on patient safety, quality and equity as possible. Additionally, The Joint Commission is not raising its accreditation fees for domestic hospitals in 2023 in recognition of the many financial challenges hospitals and health systems continue to face.

Just one in seven instances of cancer in the U.S. are detected through cancer screening, new research shows, indicating a need to ramp-up early detection efforts to increase survival rates. The independent research institution NORC at the University of Chicago found that just 14 percent of diagnosed cancers are detected via screening — and most others are found when symptoms occur or in the course of other medical care.

Patients with allergic diseases are at higher risk of cataract development and subsequent surgery, according to study findings published in Scientific Reports. Common in adults and children, allergic diseases, including atopic dermatitis (AD), allergic rhinitis (AR), and asthma, have demonstrated consistently increasing prevalence over the last few decades.

The federal government should ensure Medicare Advantage insurers Humana and Aetna cover cataract surgeries for older Georgians without delays or denials, Georgia's Democratic Congressional representatives said this week. Aetna started requiring prior authorizations for cataract surgeries in its Medicare Advantage plans across the country last year.
