ASCA conducted its ninth 60-Second Survey and asked questions about medical supply and drug price changes over the past year. The survey, conducted last month, received 139 responses from facilities in 39 states and one respondent from the US Virgin Islands. ASCA introduced the 60-Second Survey, a bimonthly survey series, in spring 2021. As the name suggests, each survey takes 60 seconds or less to complete and asks fewer than 10 questions on a current topic. Read this Digital Debut for more information on this survey’s results. |

On September 26, ASCA staff met with Senators Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) to discuss S. 3132, the Outpatient Surgery Quality and Access Act of 2021. Both senators have agreed to help reintroduce the legislation in the 118th Congress. ASCA will work closely with their congressional staff to generate more support from other Senate offices while gearing up for any potential inclusion of current bill provisions in the year-end omnibus. ASCA is grateful to have bipartisan support for the bill introduction.

When a Rothman Orthopaedic Institute surgeon replaced Kathryn Patterson's left hip in May 2021, the North Cape May resident was part of a massive shift in the way joint replacements are done. The 78-year-old arrived at the AtlantiCare surgery center in Egg Harbor Township at 7 a.m. the day of her surgery and was back home in the middle of the afternoon.

More than 120 state medical associations and national specialty societies have joined the AMA in urging Congress to institute Medicare payment reforms in order to maintain patients’ access to care. Reduced Medicare physician payment rates are being outweighed by the rising cost of running a practice plus the administrative and financial burdens associated with participating in Medicare.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed Assembly Bill 2236, which would have allowed optometrists in the state to use therapeutic lasers, remove eyelid lesions and perform corneal crosslinking. Newsom shared the news in his Sept. 28 legislative update, saying, "This bill would authorize optometrists to perform ocular surgical procedures currently performed by ophthalmologists after completing specified education and training. I am not convinced that the education and training required is sufficient to prepare optometrists to perform the surgical procedures identified."
