A research firm conducted interviews and data analysis at 9 ASCs to understand the value of switching to an EMR. They found ASCs averaging 100 cases/month & spending $1,600/month on paper switched to an EMR & saw these benefits: Recognized $177,000 in annual benefits, paid back the EMR cost in 4 months, achieved 301% ROI by year 3. Larger centers saw even greater financial savings.

Brandon Fazio, senior director of financial analysis of Ambulatory Surgery Centers at Community Health Systems in Franklin, Tennessee, says that he is looking forward to his first meeting, August 21–22, as a member of the Advisory Panel on Hospital Outpatient Payment (HOP). It was a multibillion-dollar strike, so stealthy and precise that the only visible sign was a notice that suddenly vanished from a government website. In August 2017, a federal agency with sweeping powers over the health care industry posted a notice informing insurance companies that they weren't allowed to charge physicians a fee when the companies paid the doctors for their work.

While physicians are working hard to see many patients and keep their practices profitable, there's an insidious underlying problem that saps/sabotages/drains their major efforts: staff shortages that prevent them from efficient work, and perhaps even from billing for the work they've done. Today, the Health Resources and Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, announced awards of more than $100 million to train more nurses and grow the nursing workforce. These investments will address the increasing demand for registered nurses, nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and nurse faculty.

Covenant High Plains Surgery Center announced Dr. Ryan C. Owen has completed the first robotic sacrocolpopexy in an independent freestanding surgery center in West Texas. Sacrocolpopexy is performed to treat pelvic organ prolapse, which occurs when the connective tissues or muscles within the body cavity are weak and unable to hold the pelvis in its natural orientation.

Seniors face more than $50 billion in unpaid medical bills, many of which they shouldn't have to pay, according to a federal watchdog report. In an all-too-common scenario, medical providers charge elderly patients the full price of an expensive medical service rather than work with the insurer that is supposed to cover it.
