ASCA has posted a 2023 Q3 Medicare Payment Resources document based on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) July payment addenda. The payment resources document provides separate worksheets that break out the codes into groups, such as separately payable, office-based, device-intensive and more.

For the first time in history, Medicare has the ability to directly negotiate the prices of covered prescription drugs due to President Biden’s historic prescription drug law, the Inflation Reduction Act. Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released revised guidance detailing the requirements and parameters of the new Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program for the first round of negotiations, which will occur during 2023 and 2024 and result in prices that will be effective beginning in 2026.

With the growing popularity of medications like Ozempic (semaglutide), Trulicity (dulaglutide), and other glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and weight loss, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) suggests withholding the medication before elective surgery to reduce the risk of complications associated with anesthesia in adults and children. GLP-1 agonists are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The AHRQ Toolkit for Improving Surgical Care and Recovery addresses common surgical complications such as surgical site and urinary tract infections, and venous thromboembolism. The toolkit, created for surgical teams by surgeons, was tested in more than 300 hospitals nationwide and includes evidence-based enhanced recovery pathways for colorectal, gynecologic, hip and knee replacement, hip fracture and emergency general surgery.

Experienced cataract surgeons know that the most challenging cataract cases are often the nanophthalmic eyes. These tiny eyes have a very short axial length of less than 20 mm along with a shallow anterior chamber, less pupil dilation and a smaller anterior segment.

Sebela Pharmaceuticals today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted approval of Suflave (polyethylene glycol, sodium sulfate, potassium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and sodium chloride for oral solution), for colonoscopy preparation in adults. Suflave, a low-volume, safe and effective colonoscopy preparation – with a taste similar to a lemon-lime sports drink – was developed and will be marketed by Braintree Laboratories, a leader in gastroenterology and part of Sebela Pharmaceuticals.

The celebratory ribbon was cut on June 12 by staff of the new Valley Surgery Center which is located in the Hudson Medical Center. Currently, a partnership between Associated Eye Care and Hudson Physicians, the new surgery center is set to open in the upcoming months.
