As the South Carolina Legislature wrapped up its first extraordinary session on June 14, Senator Mike Fanning (D) introduced SB 835, which would reduce the state’s sales tax from 5 percent to 3 percent while expanding the sales tax to apply to sales of services, including medical services.

Effective August 27, 2023, The Joint Commission is eliminating the term licensed independent practitioner for its ambulatory health care and officed-based surgery programs. The revisions are consistent with current terminology used by the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Conditions for Coverage.

Driven by recent studies, the evolving nature of the disease and the widespread vaccination of Americans against COVID-19, the American Society of Anesthesiologists and Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation today released a joint statement providing updated recommendations for the timing of elective surgeries and anesthesia for patients after a COVID-19 infection. The guidance notes that elective surgeries should be performed only after patients have clinically recovered from a COVID-19 infection and, even then, only when the anesthesiologist, surgeon or proceduralist and patient together agree to proceed.

CMS recently announced the addition of 395 new diagnosis codes, 25 deletions to the diagnosis code set, and 13 revisions. An ample amount of these changes pertains to reporting certain diseases, accidents and injuries, and social determinants of health.

Physicians who performed colonoscopies assisted by artificial intelligence achieved a 13 percent increase in the detection and removal of colorectal polyps, according to new research by Northwestern Medicine shared May 9 at the Digestive Diseases Week conference in Chicago. Gastroenterologists using the FDA-approved Medtronic GI Genius computer-aided detection system removed more adenomas, the most common type of colorectal polyp, compared to when the system was not available or used.

The Joint Replacement Center of Louisiana, an ASC in southwest Louisiana that focuses exclusively on joint replacement surgery, celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 20. The new 8,580-foot medical facility was designed to provide patients in the region with access to world-class orthopedic surgical care in a safe and convenient outpatient setting, according to a release.
