On May 3, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) at the US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) released a new report detailing the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the healthcare workforce. The report reviews existing research, including data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) that shows that 1.5 million healthcare workers lost their jobs between March and April 2020 alone.

The coronavirus pandemic has accelerated the growth of ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) and growth is likely to continue for the foreseeable future, an ASC expert says. The first ASC in the United States opened in 1970 and explosive growth happened through the late 1980s and into the 1990s, according to the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (ASCA).

The U.S. could face a labor gap of up to 450,000 nurses by 2025, according to new research out Wednesday. An analysis from McKinsey & Company specifically found a potential shortage of between 200,000 and 450,000 nurses who are available for direct patient care.

Outpatient surgery may be an option for people who are having their hips, knees or other joints replaced. It is part of a trend in orthopedic surgery to move total joint arthroplasty, commonly known as joint replacement, from inpatient to outpatient surgery. Patients benefit from the shorter hospital stay, and they are more satisfied recovering at home.

Doctors in the United States are prioritizing only the most critical patients and hospitals are rationing supplies of a crucial drug after a covid lockdown in China temporarily closed a GE Healthcare factory that is a vital source for a key ingredient in medical imaging. The shutdown of the facility in Shanghai in April halted production of contrast media, an iodine solution that medical staff inject into blood vessels to allow a device such as a CT scanner or fluoroscope to see inside the body.

A new survey of healthcare workers by employee listening leader, Perceptyx, has revealed that nine in ten have experienced (or been in close proximity to) violence from a patient or a patient’s caregiver in the past month. Three in four have encountered both verbal and physical assaults in the month, and nearly half of workers needed to call for security or another coworker to assist.

In this cohort study of 111 801 U.S. women, compared with no endoscopy, initiation of endoscopy before 50 years of age was associated with reduced risk of colorectal cancer and specifically colorectal cancer diagnosed before 55 years of age. Initiation of endoscopy from 45 to 49 years of age was associated with a greater reduction in the absolute risk of colorectal cancer through 60 years of age compared with initiation from 50 to 54 years of age.
