Since ASCA’s last update in July, healthcare organizations across the country posted 331 breaches of protected health information (PHI) affecting 500 or more individuals. Consistent with previous time periods, the vast majority of the breaches—95 percent—were caused by unauthorized access or hacking. Read this Digital Debut for more information.

On January 25, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a surveyor memo outlining Vaccination Expectations for Surveyors Performing Federal Oversight. The memo states that surveyors who are not fully vaccinated should not participate as part of the on-site survey team.

Health care workers in about half the states face a Thursday deadline to get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine under a Biden administration mandate that will be rolled out across the rest of the country in the coming weeks. While the requirement is welcomed by some, others fear it will worsen already serious staff shortages if employees quit rather than comply.

A major new study has found that more and more young people are being diagnosed with late-stage colon cancer, prompting renewed calls among doctors for early detection and screening. Researchers from University of Colorado School of Medicine analyzed data from more than 100,000 people with adenocarcinoma, a more aggressive cancer that's more likely to be caught in later stages.

The South Carolina Legislature moved forward on repealing certificate-of-need health care rules this week when the Senate approved a bill that would eliminate the laws. Certificate-of-need laws were put in place to regulate how many hospital facilities are available in an area and which facilities are allowed to offer which services in an effort to keep costs to consumers lower.

FDA Recalls, Market Withdrawals, & Safety Alerts (01/27/22)
Blaine Labs Company is voluntarily recalling one lot of RevitaDerm Wound Care to the consumer level because a bottle of the 1.0 ounce RevitaDerm Wound Care Gel has been found to be contaminated with Bacillus cereus. Patients who apply the contaminated product to a wound could develop a skin and soft tissue infection which could lead to serious complications.
