At the beginning of this month, CMS resumed data collection for four outcomes measures in the ASC Quality Reporting (ASCQR) Program. Surgery centers should have started collecting data on January 1 for ASC-1: Patient Burn; ASC-2: Patient Fall; ASC-3: Wrong Site, Wrong Side, Wrong Patient, Wrong Procedure, Wrong Implant; and ASC-4: All-Cause Hospital Transfer/Admission for all patients, not just fee-for-service (FFS) Medicare beneficiaries. ASCA has posted the 2023 Q1 Medicare Rate Calculator, which is updated to account for corrections posted by CMS on December 30, although the updates only affect a single drug code (HCPCS J9314). Please read the note regarding the new complexity adjustment policy in 2023 that affects codes C7500 to C7555.

This guidance amends the previous "Calendar Year 2023 Fee Guidance for the Federal Independent Dispute Resolution Process under the No Surprises Act" released on October 31, 2022. The Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor, and the Treasury are amending the prior 2023 guidance to increase the administrative fee for the Federal independent dispute resolution process from $50 to $350 per party for disputes initiated during the calendar year beginning January 1, 2023, due to supplemental data analysis and increasing expenditures in carrying out the Federal IDR process since the development of the prior 2023 guidance.

Upholding its ongoing commitment to the improvement of the patient care environment, the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) announced the release of its v42 Standards Handbooks for Medicare Deemed Status (MDS) and Ambulatory Accreditation. The updated editions provide guidance for health care providers seeking practical knowledge of changes to relevant Standards in the specific ambulatory settings for their organizations. Revisions in the v42 handbooks introduces new terminology and streamlines Standards architecture across all programs.

All patients undergoing procedures requiring anesthesia should be asked about cannabis use, according to guidelines released by the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA Pain Medicine). The first U.S. guidelines on cannabis use in relation to surgery also notes regular use may worsen pain and nausea after surgery and increase the need for opioids. |
