An influential congressional advisory group voted on Thursday to recommend that Medicare increase physician reimbursement next year, but retreated from its previous position that annual payment updates should be linked to inflation — a reform long sought by doctors. Members of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission voted 15-2 to support a 0.5 percentage point increase to Medicare’s physician reimbursement in 2027 above current law.

The West Virginia Board of Optometry went beyond its rulemaking authority when it sought to expand optometrists’ scope of practice to include some eyelid surgeries, according to a circuit court ruling in the Mountaineer State. Out of concern for patient safety, the West Virginia State Medical Association and the West Virginia Academy of Eye Physicians & Surgeons Inc. sued the state optometry board in Kanawha County Circuit Court.

This practice guideline addresses perioperative pain management using local and regional anesthesia for cardiothoracic, mastectomy, and abdominal surgery in adults and children. For adults, the American Society of Anesthesiologists Task Force on Perioperative Pain Management strongly recommends fascial plane blocks to reduce pain and/or opioid requirements in the first 24 h postoperatively for open cardiothoracic, abdominal, retroperitoneal, and pelvic surgeries and mastectomy.

Innovations Surgery Center (ISC), a physician-focused ambulatory surgery center in Rockville, Maryland, has expanded its surgical capabilities with the addition of a robotic surgical system. Beginning in 2026, ISC will offer robotic-assisted, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, becoming the first ambulatory surgery center in the Mid-Atlantic region to provide robotic options specifically for advanced gynecologic procedures.
