Female physicians working full time earn about $0.78 on the dollar in total compensation compared to their male peers, and $0.80 on the dollar in terms of base salary – a gap in pay that is substantially wider than the gender pay gap observed elsewhere in the U.S. labor market. Role- and employer-specific factors cannot explain the entire pay gap between male and female physicians.

Organizations including the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, and others have petitioned the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to give healthcare workers in the H-1B visa program -- which allows U.S. employers to hire workers outside the country to work in specialty occupations -- an exemption from the fee.
