Healthcare providers and patients alike receive their fair share of inappropriate racial comments or racist behavior, though a new analysis of race-related patient safety incidents suggest the former experience the majority of those incidents. Fifty-seven percent of racial patient safety incidents within a sample of over 500 events were related to a patient or their family members' inappropriate racial comments or behaviors, ECRI reported this week.

More than eight in ten healthcare facilities are experiencing allied healthcare professional shortages, leading them to increase hiring incentives and employ newly graduated professionals, according to a survey from AMN Healthcare. The survey reflects responses from 1,005 healthcare executives from hospital systems, laboratories, home health facilities, independent hospitals, and other healthcare facilities gathered between April 5 and April 19, 2022.

California optometrists lost their latest bid to expand their scope of practice when the state's governor recently vetoed a bill that would have allowed them to perform laser and scalpel eye surgeries, long the domain of ophthalmologists. Assembly Bill 2236 sought to permit optometrists who treat glaucoma to perform advanced procedures, including excision and drainage of small lesions, corneal crosslinking, administering injections for blocked glands in the eyelid, and using therapeutic lasers.

New research from the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and Jackson Physician Search, a leading firm in physician recruitment, confirms that physician burnout and turnover rates remain dangerously high due to the rising toll of stress during the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting staffing shortages. The new report – Back from Burnout: Confronting the Post-Pandemic Physician Turnover Crisis – reflects data from hundreds of administrators and physicians across the country who took part in the 2022 Physician Burnout, Engagement and Retention Survey, commissioned by Jackson Physician Search in partnership with MGMA and conducted in August 2022.
