Powder River Surgery Center in Gillette, Wyoming, opened its doors for an open house event recently, as part of National ASC Month. Administrator Linda Bedwell organized the event to bring together elected officials, private payers and center staff to discuss the state of healthcare in Wyoming and the issues facing ASCs across the state. Staff at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have been monitoring the COVID-19 public health emergency and the ASCs temporarily enrolled as hospitals. As states are ending (or have already ended) their state of emergency/pandemic plans related to COVID-19 and are returning to normal status, ASCA has been asked to remind its members enrolled in the Hospitals Without Walls program what the QSO-20-24-ASC memo says and what they signed as part of their participation attestation.

Bon Secours St. Francis Health System plans to break ground this fall on a new ambulatory surgery center at its Millennium Campus that will take a substantial portion of the orthopedic, spinal, and ENT patients now seen in its hospitals. The $30 million Millennium Surgery Center is a partnership between Bon Secours, Compass Surgical Partners, and two physician groups – Piedmont Orthopedics and Carolina ENT – and reflects a growing trend across South Carolina and the U.S.

In this randomized clinical trial that included 200 patients, a multimodal opioid-sparing postoperative pain protocol, compared with standard opioid prescribing, significantly reduced postoperative opioid consumption over 6 weeks (median oral morphine equivalent consumption, 0 mg vs 40 mg, respectively). Among patients who underwent arthroscopic knee or shoulder surgery, a multimodal opioid-sparing postoperative pain management protocol significantly reduced postoperative opioid consumption compared with standard opioid prescribing.

The Biden administration on Thursday extended the nation’s COVID-19 public health emergency for the next 90 days as officials brace for a potential surge of infections over the winter. The declaration comes as daily deaths and case rates have been falling, though the U.S. continues to see more than 300 people dying due to COVID-19 each day.

When it comes to nurses, some specialties earn more than others. Registered nurses (RNs), the largest group, have seen their earnings rise for the past 2 years while the earnings of licensed practical nurses (LPNs) have remained stagnant. In our Medscape RN/LPN Compensation Report 2022, we surveyed 4922 US nurses (3444 RNs and 1478 LPNs) about their earnings, work environment, degrees, certifications, and supplemental income.
