Staff at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have been monitoring the COVID-19 public health emergency and the ASCs temporarily enrolled as hospitals. Bon Secours St. Francis Health System plans to break ground this fall on a new ambulatory surgery center at its Millennium Campus that will take a substantial portion of the orthopedic, spinal, and ENT patients now seen in its hospitals. The $30 million Millennium Surgery Center is a partnership between Bon Secours, Compass Surgical Partners, and two physician groups – Piedmont Orthopedics and Carolina ENT – and reflects a growing trend across South Carolina and the U.S.

In this randomized clinical trial that included 200 patients, a multimodal opioid-sparing postoperative pain protocol, compared with standard opioid prescribing, significantly reduced postoperative opioid consumption over 6 weeks (median oral morphine equivalent consumption, 0 mg vs 40 mg, respectively). Among patients who underwent arthroscopic knee or shoulder surgery, a multimodal opioid-sparing postoperative pain management protocol significantly reduced postoperative opioid consumption compared with standard opioid prescribing.

Registered nurses (RNs), the largest group, have seen their earnings rise for the past 2 years while the earnings of licensed practical nurses (LPNs) have remained stagnant.
