Beginning September 9, ASCs in Pennsylvania will not be required to submit waivers to perform common procedures routinely performed in ASCs in other states, such as total joint procedures, laparoscopic procedures, laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedures, and dialysis and vascular access procedures. On July 15, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the 2023 proposed payment rule for ASCs and hospital outpatient departments (HOPD). ASCA will once again submit comments raising industry-wide concerns, but it is important that CMS hears from individual centers as well.

Recent data indicate that protection against postcolonoscopy colorectal cancer by colonoscopy continues to improve up to adenoma detection rates of 50 percent.

Physicians tell us they're seeing more frequent incidents of other doctors acting disrespectfully toward patients or coworkers, too casually about patient privacy, angrily or aggressively at work, and sometimes even criminally. Such behavior is still relatively uncommon, and many respondents say they are proud of the high standards of attitudes and behavior shown by fellow physicians.

Many medications commonly used in anesthesiology and pain medicine are in serious shortage, according to an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) member survey. "Although I am not surprised by [these] drug shortages, I am quite alarmed by the impact they are having," said principal investigator Michael Ganio, PharmD, a senior director of pharmacy practice and quality for ASHP, in Bethesda, Md.

Lawmakers are urging the Biden administration to strengthen the federal government’s cyber defenses in the health care sector amid a spike in cyberattacks, a push industry leaders see as a way to help protect a critical sector that stores sensitive information. In a letter addressed to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) and Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) urged the agency to better protect the health care and public health sector from the growing number of cyber threats.
