A research firm conducted interviews and data analysis at 9 ASCs to understand the value of switching to an EMR. They found ASCs averaging 100 cases/month & spending $1,600/month on paper switched to an EMR & saw these benefits: Recognized $177,000 in annual benefits, paid back the EMR cost in 4 months, achieved 301% ROI by year 3. Larger centers saw even greater financial savings.

New requirements on surgical smoke evacuation take effect January 1, 2026, in Missouri. Governor Mike Parson (R) signed HB 402 into law in July, enacting the new requirements for healthcare facilities in the state. Under the new law, hospitals and ASCs accredited by The Joint Commission that perform procedures that produce surgical smoke plume from the use of energy-based devices must adopt and implement required policies and procedures to ensure the evacuation of surgical smoke plume by use of a surgical smoke plume evacuation system. On July 13, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the 2024 proposed payment rule for ASCs and hospital outpatient departments (HOPD). ASCA will once again submit comments raising industry-wide concerns, but it is important that CMS hears from individual centers as well. The deadline to submit comments is Monday, September 11.

Starting salaries for physicians have rebounded from the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring continued robust demand for doctors and a limited supply, according to an annual report from AMN Healthcare's Physician Solutions division (formerly known as Merritt Hawkins). The 2023 Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives indicates that average starting salaries are up 19 percent year-over-year for psychiatrists, up 16 percent for dermatologists, up 12.5 percent for anesthesiologists, and up 12 percent for orthopedic surgeons, with various other types of physicians also seeing starting salary increases.

A significant majority of prescribers, 9 in 10, and virtually all pharmacists see team-based care as beneficial to patients and would reduce the total cost of care, according to a new Surescripts survey. The survey revealed that while a majority of providers believe it’s important for the health care industry to move to team-based care, there are other challenges that stand in the way of improving the delivery of patient care.

AGA, AASLD, ACG, ASGE and NASPGHAN recognize that the new class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, such as semaglutide, tirzepatide, exenatide, liraglutide, albiglutide, dulaglutide, and lixisneatide, currently used for treatment of diabetes and/or weight loss, may be associated with delayed gastric emptying. There is concern that this class of medication may be associated with safety issues regarding sedation and endoscopy.

The number of cyberattacks and information system breaches in healthcare has grown steadily, escalating from isolated incidents to widespread targeted and malicious attacks. In 2022, 707 data breeches occurred, exposing more than 51.9 million patient records, according to data from the Department of Health and Human Services.

Middle-class Americans are the most likely to be saddled with medical debt, with nearly 1 in 4 — or roughly 17 million people — having unpaid medical bills, according to a report shared first with Axios from center-left think tank Third Way. Middle-income Americans, who earn $50,000-$100,000 a year, are more likely than those with lower incomes to seek care but don't qualify for Medicaid or charity care to help pay for it.
