National ASC Month runs the entirety of August and is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the ASC community by advocating for ASCs. Coinciding with Congress’s August recess, each year leaders in the ASC community spend the month promoting the work their facilities do by inviting their members of Congress into their facilities to learn about ASCs, the services they provide and the advantages of the ASC model.

The latest national survey commissioned by Avanza Healthcare Strategies, a leading expert on ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) and outpatient services, found most hospitals and health systems are planning to increase their investments in ASCs. This fourth annual survey of senior healthcare executives and clinical leaders, available here, provides valuable insight into hospital-owned and hospital-physician joint venture ASC trends.

A New York federal judge on Wednesday dismissed a surgeon’s legal challenge that sought to roll back key pieces of a federal law that protects patients from surprise out-of-network bills. Judge Ann Donnelly ruled against the surgeon, finding that the law is constitutional, and dismissed the case for lack of standing and dismissed the surgeon’s request for a preliminary injunction.

Sixty-three provider and healthcare advocacy organizations are petitioning Congress to pass legislation expanding international medical graduates’ ability to immediately practice in the U.S. The two letters, sent to the House and Senate’s Judiciary Committee leaders late last week, address the Conrad 30 Waiver Program.

A research team from the lab of Quing Zhu, the Edwin H. Murty Professor of Engineering in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, has combined optical coherence tomography and machine learning to develop a colorectal cancer imaging tool that may one day improve the traditional endoscopy currently used by doctors. The results were published in the June issue of the Journal of Biophot, with an image featured on the inside cover.
