CMS recently updated its surveyor memo that provides “Guidance related to Emergency Preparedness- Exercise Exemption based on A Facility’s Activation of their Emergency Plan.” CMS Emergency Preparedness (EP) regulations require facilities to “conduct exercises to test the facility’s EP plan to ensure that it works and that staff are trained appropriately about their roles and the facility’s processes.” If the facility must activate its emergency plan, however, the regulations allow for a one-year exemption from the facility’s required full-scale testing exercise.

The American Gastroenterological Association today released a series of evidence-based position statements that amount to a call to action for a national colorectal cancer screening approach, which would enable everyone to participate in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programs without barriers. CRC experts developed eight statements, which highlight the continuum of CRC screening, identify barriers and provide a platform for physician groups, patient advocates, industry, employers, payers and the government to work together eliminate screening barriers.

United Surgical Partners International (USPI), a subsidiary of Tenet Healthcare, and United Urology Group (UUG) signed an agreement on June 21 to form a joint venture partnership in 22 ASCs, according to a release. USPI will acquire a portion of UUG’s ownership interests in well-established and brand-new facilities located in Maryland, Colorado and Arizona.

A first-of-its-kind clinical trial led by scientists at University College London and the University of Sheffield found that using robot-assisted surgery to remove and rebuild bladder cancer allows patients to recover much faster and spend considerably (20 percent) less time in hospital. The study, which was published in JAMA on May 15th and funded by The Urology Foundation with a grant from the Champniss Foundation, also discovered that robotic surgery cut the chance of readmission in half (52 percent) and revealed a "striking” four-fold (77 percent) reduction in the prevalence of blood clots (deep vein thrombus & pulmonary emboli) – a significant cause of health decline and morbidity – when compared to patients who had open surgery.
