The Connecticut Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (CAASC), in partnership with their advocates in the Connecticut Senate, successfully had language included in the state budget that would sunset the state’s tax on ASCs on July 1, 2022. CAASC has worked to overturn the tax for years and saw recent success in securing reductions in the state’s tax on ASCs during the 2021 legislative session, but this year’s effort would fully repeal the tax on ASCs in the state.

Medicare Advantage plans approve most requests for coverage for care, according to a group for health insurers. When the plans do deny preauthorization request incorrectly, the main reason is often lack of clear advice from Medicare program managers, the group says.

Every year, The Joint Commission receives reports of unintended retained foreign objects (URFOs), which are categorized as sentinel events. According to the Sentinel Event Database, there were 326 events reported in ambulatory health care organizations from 2010-2020 and URFOs—with 40 reports—were the second most commonly reported sentinel event.

The CMS Bundled Payments for Care Improvement Advanced (BPCI Advanced) Model reduced Medicare fee-for-service episode payments for both surgical and medical episodes, according to a new report for CMS prepared by The Lewin Group. CMS launched the BCPI Advanced Model in October 2018, building upon the original BCPI initiative.

AtlantiCare is marking the 25th anniversary of the opening of its flagship surgery center, which took place April 9, 1997, in its Health Park in Egg Harbor Township. Staff celebrated the silver anniversary by presenting every patient with a silver-ribbon-wrapped carnation to thank them for choosing AtlantiCare.
