On January 1, new regulations related to surprise medical billing that impact ASCs went into effect. The regulations, stemming from the December 2020 No Surprises Act, provide new patient protections against surprise billing for emergency services and for certain nonemergency services provided by out-of-network (OON) providers at in-network facilities (such as ASCs). To comply, ASCs will need to take certain actions.

The Supreme Court on Thursday blocked President Joe Biden's vaccine and testing requirement aimed at large businesses, but it allowed a vaccine mandate for certain health care workers to go into effect nationwide. The decision is a huge hit to Biden's attempts to use the power of the federal government to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

AMA News Release (01/13/22)
"The American Medical Association (AMA) strongly disagrees with the MedPAC's recommendation today to continue the freeze in Medicare physician fee payments, a decision that imperils patient access to high-quality care as the costs to practice medicine continue to rise. AMA research shows that, when adjusted for inflation in practice costs, Medicare physician payment has declined 20 percent from 2001 to 2020," said Gerald E. Harmon, M.D., AMA president.

The Lancet (01/15/22) Vol. 399, No. 10321, P. 233
