A study recently published in Stroke: Vascular and Interventional Neurology has found that diagnostic cerebral angiographies performed in the ambulatory setting can be completed more efficiently than those performed in a traditional hospital, highlighting how advances in neuroendovascular care are expanding the locations in which patients can safely receive treatment. Here, on behalf of their colleagues in the University at Buffalo Neurosurgery endovascular research team, Rosalind Lai and Elad Levy discuss these findings and their broader significance.

A nonprofit patient advocacy group has filed a lawsuit seeking to open the American Medical Association’s copyrighted Current Procedural Terminology up for free use. The complaint, shared Thursday by PatientRightsAdvocate.org, explains that because the administrative codes for classifying medical procedures have been ingrained into government systems and electronic healthcare transactions by law, their use by the public has become unavoidable.

Prior pars plana vitrectomy is associated with an increased risk for postoperative cystoid macular edema in patients undergoing cataract surgery, according to research published in JAMA Ophthalmology. Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX US Network, a multicenter federated electronic health record network that includes academic and community hospitals throughout the United States.

Comments on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ 2027 proposed payment rule for ASCs and hospital outpatient departments are due on August 31. CMS is accepting comments online and ASCA encourages all members to submit facility-specific feedback. ASCA will once again submit comments raising industry-wide concerns, but it is important that CMS hears from individual centers as well. Read the Digital Debut to learn more.

In real-world, high-volume practice, [water exchange (WE) colonoscopy] substantially improved neoplasia detection and bowel cleansing, with the greatest benefit in the right colon and persistence of effect against a high-performing air insufflation baseline. The time cost was predictable, supporting WE as an effective insertion technique when maximizing diagnostic yield is prioritized.
