The Louisiana Department of Health’s Bureau of Health Services Financing finalized changes to the state’s transfer agreement and patient transfer requirements for ASCs a few weeks back. The final rule tweaked the state’s written transfer agreement requirement but did not align it with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requirements adopted in 2019, as other states have. On September 15, the US House Ways & Means Committee held a hearing titled, “Preparing America’s Health Care Infrastructure for the Climate Crisis.” In a statement given at the start of the hearing, Committee Chair Richard Neal (D-MA) indicated the purpose was to “examine how the health sector is contributing to the climate crisis, the ways extreme weather events are disrupting the health care delivery system nationwide, and what’s needed to safeguard our health care infrastructure from these changing conditions.”

The COVID-19 public health emergency declaration was accompanied by several waivers and flexibilities that made it easier for healthcare providers to care for patients amid a global pandemic. Expanded telehealth coverage, Stark Law waivers, and 1135 waivers are key flexibilities that have helped healthcare organizations maintain quality of care and increase capacity, according to Jody Erdfarb, a partner in Wiggin and Dana’s Healthcare Department.

This meta-analysis provides compelling evidence that physician burnout is associated with poor function and sustainability of healthcare organizations primarily by contributing to the career disengagement and turnover of physicians and secondarily by reducing the quality of patient care. Healthcare organizations should invest more time and effort in implementing evidence-based strategies to mitigate physician burnout across specialties, and particularly in emergency medicine and for physicians in training or residency.

Almost a decade ago, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory recognized that a surge in demand for N95 filtering facepiece respirators could outpace supply. Therefore, NIOSH began exploring the use of elastomeric half mask respirators as an alternative respirator type for routine use or as a potential strategy during supply chain shortages.

The paper discusses AHRQ's new resource, Measure Dx, which synthesizes knowledge from diagnostic safety measurement researchers to provide pragmatic guidance on how healthcare organizations can identify and analyze diagnostic errors for learning and improvement. |

The Josh Bersin Company, a research and advisory firm focused on HR and workforce strategies, has published groundbreaking research, revealing the real extent to which U.S. healthcare organizations must radically adapt to reverse the effects of mass resignations, impending retirements, a shortage of new nurses entering the field, and an aging population in need of more care. While the study, The Global Workforce Intelligence Project, shows the gap in nursing may only register as a net new demand of 200,000 nurses, market factors will create an actual gap of more than 2.1 million care providers by 2025.
