It appears likely that the Biden administration will continue the declaration of a public health emergency (PHE) related to the COVID-19 pandemic until at least October 2022. The PHE was first declared by then US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar on January 31, 2020, and renewed every 90 days since. The most recent PHE declaration renewal was issued by current HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra on April 12, 2022, and is set to expire on July 15.

A group of 27 healthcare sector stakeholders has issued a Declaration to Advance Patient Safety. Patient safety has been a pressing issue in healthcare since 1999, with the publication of the landmark report "To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System." Despite two decades of attention, estimates of annual patient deaths due to medical errors have risen steadily to as many as 440,000 lives, a figure that was reported in the Journal of Patient Safety in 2013.

In a recent survey of more than 6,500 physicians from across the United States representing a broad spectrum of racial and ethnic diversity, nearly 30 percent of respondents reported experiencing discrimination and mistreatment from patients or patients' family members or visitors. Further, close to 20 percent of responding physicians had experiences in which patients or their family members or visitors refused to allow the physician to care for them because of the physician's racial or ethnic attributes or gender.

The American Medical Association this week, along with Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Joint Commission, announced the launch of a new learning network to help U.S. health systems approach their quality improvement and patient safety practices with health equity top of mind. The goal of the Advancing Equity through Quality and Safety Peer Network – which offers a year-long mentorship and networking program – is to improve health outcomes for historically marginalized populations.

Physician practices nationwide had a busy start to 2022, as physician productivity, compensation, and revenues all rose with higher patient volumes from Q4 2021 to Q1 2022. However, higher volumes also contributed to higher investments/subsidies needed to support physician practices and ongoing expense increases as practices contend with inflation and a tight labor market.
