Every year, tens of thousands of people enrolled in private Medicare Advantage plans are denied necessary care that should be covered under the program, federal investigators concluded in a report published on Thursday. The HHS Office of Inspector General has released a favorable advisory opinion on physician ownership. The decision should be good news for some manufacturers of innovator medical devices—specifically, companies in which physician-inventors have received ownership interests in exchange for their product development contributions, but whose orders represent only a limited proportion of the companies’ sales—and the health systems, hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers who are the potential customers.
