ASCA and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) have agreed to a 2019 pilot program with the goal of encouraging ten to fifteen ASCs to join an AAOS registry. ASCA member centers that participate may be eligible to have their first year of registry fees waived.
The AAOS Registry Program’s mission is to improve orthopaedic care through the collection, analysis and reporting of actionable data. Their oldest registry program is the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR), which was launched in 2009 and has grown to be the world’s largest national registry of hip and knee replacement data by annual procedural count, with more than 1.6 million procedures contained within its database. With total joint procedures increasingly migrating to the outpatient space, garnering ASC procedure data via AAOS Registry Program submissions will be invaluable in showing ASCs as a viable site of service. Furthermore, registry participation can empower ASCs to enhance the patient experience and benchmark performance; orthopaedic surgeons to reduce complications and revision rates; and device manufacturers to strengthen post-market surveillance.
In 2018, the AAOS Board of Directors and Registry Oversight Committee (ROC) initiated an additional registry program that is available for ASCA member participation. The AAOS Shoulder & Elbow Registry (SER) seeks to collect information on the more than 750,000 shoulder arthroplasty, rotator cuff repair and elbow arthroplasty surgeries performed in the United States each year. Centers that choose to participate will contribute to national performance benchmarks and have access to on-demand, practice-specific quality reports and dashboards.
Prospective centers will be grouped by their procedure capture method. One group will contain ASCs using similar EHRs, another will contain ASCs needing a third-party data extractor and the final group will contain ASCs that do not have an EHR implemented.
