The American Medical Association along with 111 specialty societies and state medical association wrote administration officials today to warn about health plans undermining the No Surprises Act and urge federal regulators to increase enforcement and transparency. The No Surprises Act was designed to protect patients from surprise medical bills and promote fair contracting between payers and physicians by establishing a meaningful dispute process.

Hundreds of foreign doctors about to complete training in the U.S. will have to leave the country if the federal government doesn’t rapidly process their visa waiver applications, which have been languishing since the fall and winter, immigration attorneys say. The waiver program, run by the Department of Health and Human Services, allows physicians who aren’t U.S. citizens to stay in the country while transitioning from the visa they used during their training to temporary worker status.

The ASC Quality Collaboration (ASCQC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing patient safety and quality of care delivery in ASCs, has launched its second annual ASC Safety & Quality Assessment. Building on the nearly 400 ASCs that participated in the 2025 assessment, ASCQC is calling on surgery centers nationwide to evaluate their performance against nationally recognized best practices during this year’s six-week submission window, which runs through June 15. The online survey is available at no cost to ASCs and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. Learn more.

On April 27, ASCA published a new analysis by KNG Health Consulting that provides details on the enormous fiscal benefit that surgery centers provide for the Medicare program. According to the analysis, ASCs saved Medicare $4.46 billion in 2019 alone. Despite a dip in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, savings volume growth quickly resumed and went up to $5.1 billion in 2024, which is the most recent year of claims data available.
