U.S. Representatives Terri Sewell of Alabama and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania have introduced the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2025, a bipartisan effort aimed at tackling the nation’s doctor shortage by expanding Medicare-supported medical residency positions by 14,000 over the next seven years. “Our nation’s doctor shortage threatens to make it harder for millions of Americans to access the lifesaving care they depend on,” said Rep. Sewell.

ASCs that have administered AHRQ’s Ambulatory Surgery Center Survey on Patient Safety Culture any time between July 2023 and June 2025 can voluntarily submit survey data to the SOPS ASC Survey Database. ASCs that have not yet administered the survey may still do so. The database will be open until June 20 but may be extended until June 27. Participating ASCs will receive feedback reports displaying both their results and aggregated, de-identified results from all database participants. ASCA backs the Improving Seniors’ Timely Access to Care Act of 2025, a critical, bipartisan and zero-cost bill that seeks to significantly streamline the prior authorization process for Medicare Advantage beneficiaries. Today, the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation proudly hosted a Capitol Hill briefing, highlighting the critical need to update anesthesia monitoring standards to include continuous blood pressure monitoring. Current intermittent blood pressure monitoring devices frequently miss dangerous drops in blood pressure during surgery, which is associated with preventable patient harm.
