The cut in physicians’ 2024 Medicare pay rates linked to Medicare’s budget-neutrality provision was three times more than it should have been, according to an AMA analysis of 2024 claims data. The AMA is urging the Trump administration to correct a flaw in the formula used by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services that led to the pay cut before it results in a perpetual $1 billion shortfall to the annual Medicare physician payment schedule and a permanent across-the-board reduction to Medicare payment.

Age alone should not determine whether an older patient who previously had polyps removed should continue to have follow-up colonoscopies, a new Kaiser Permanente study suggests. “There is some risk associated with every colonoscopy, and these risks are known to increase with the patient’s age,” said lead author Jeffrey K. Lee, MD, MPH, a research scientist with the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research and a gastroenterologist with The Permanente Medical Group.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed weaknesses in the U.S. health care supply chain, as lockdowns at Chinese manufacturing plants rippled into shortages of personal protective equipment and contrast dye used for CT scans, among other medical products. The crisis prompted the formation of a committee by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, which published a 2022 report, at the request of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, titled “Building Resilience into the Nation’s Medical Product Supply Chains.”
