Hundreds of physicians in their white coats rallied in force in the oldest congressional office building in the nation’s capital to show their support for the elected leaders who are advancing bipartisan legislation that would stop the 2.83% cut in Medicare payments to physician practices this year while providing a 2% payment update. The AMA is leading the charge to reform the Medicare payment system and strongly supports the measure—H.R. 879, the Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act.

The percentage of rural patients traveling more than 60 minutes to obtain surgical care significantly increased between 2010 and 2020 for both low- and high-risk operations. Additionally, increases in median travel time for rural patients outpaced changes for nonrural patients.

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill on Tuesday aimed at protecting healthcare workers from the harmful effects of surgical smoke in operating rooms. The legislation, House Bill 27 (H.B. 27), was sponsored by Rep. Tarik Khan, D-Phila., and Rep. Tim Bonner, R-Butler/Mercer, and now moves to the state Senate for consideration.
