The No Surprises Act was signed into law on December 27, 2020, to protect patients from surprise billing—unexpected charges from doctors, hospitals, or other health care providers who are not part of a patient's health plan's network. The law limits the amount that patients are required to pay in those situations and creates an independent dispute resolution process for resolving disputes between commercial insurers and health care providers about payments for such out-of-network care.

ASCA’s latest 60-Second Survey asks questions regarding surgery center usage of electronic health record (EHR) systems. Whether your facility is using an EHR or not, we value your feedback! The results from this survey will be invaluable in advocacy to state and federal regulators regarding electronic health data requirements for ASCs.

The survey is designed to take approximately one minute, so you won’t need to pull any reports to respond. The survey will be open through Friday, July 3. Take the survey now.

On June 15, 2026, Vermont Governor Phil Scott signed H.583 into law, establishing Vermont’s first statutory framework specifically addressing private equity (PE) firm and hedge fund influence over clinical decision-making in the health care sector. H.583 does not prohibit PE or corporate ownership of health care facilities, but it does restrict decision-making on key clinically related business matters to licensees.

Physicians and medical students at the Annual Meeting of the American Medical Association House of Delegates adopted new policies to ensure AI strengthens patient care, supports evidence-based medicine, and remains under the oversight of physicians rather than replacing physician judgment. The policies address the growing use of AI in both clinical decision support and health insurance coverage determinations, establishing principles that AI should serve as an assistive tool—not an autonomous decision-maker—and that transparency, accountability, and physician oversight are essential whenever AI is used in patient care.
