President Donald Trump issued an executive order earlier this week directing three federal agencies to “rapidly implement and enforce” healthcare price transparency regulations he first rolled out in 2019. During Trump’s first administration, he ordered hospitals to publicly disclose prices reflecting what patients and insurers “actually pay” for services, with the goal of helping patients shop around for care.

The ASCA Nominating Committee is currently accepting nominations for the ASCA Board of Directors. There are five open positions. Candidates must hold leadership positions within an ASC or ASC management company. Those selected to serve are expected to attend at least three board meetings per year and participate in ASCA’s National Advocacy Day event. The new standard of care from the American Law Institute represents a shift away from strict reliance on medical custom and invites courts to incorporate evidence-based medicine into malpractice law. Although states may adopt the recommendations from the American Law Institute at different times and to varying degrees, the restatement offers health professionals and the organizations in which they practice an opportunity to reconsider how medical negligence will be assessed, and to focus more directly on promoting patient safety and improving care delivery.

States across the country have introduced legislation seeking to prohibit attempts by insurers to impose time limits on their coverage of anesthesia services. So far this year, nine states—Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington—have introduced 16 bills aimed at stopping such policies. A bill that would force insurance companies to cover the cost of anesthesia for the entire duration of surgery passed unanimously out of the insurance committee. Currently, insurance companies could deny anesthesia coverage if the surgery goes on too long.
