The American Medical Association today announced the release of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) 2026 code set adding 288 new codes designating the latest advances in medical, surgical, and diagnostic services available to patients. The CPT code set is trusted as the backbone of health data interoperability in the U.S. and provides the means for the nation’s data-driven health care system to easily exchange medical service information.

Despite recent declines, opioids remain commonly prescribed to about 1 in 5 U.S. adults who live with chronic pain as effective alternatives are limited. As part of its broader strategy to address the opioid crisis, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration today issued draft guidance titled “Development of Non-Opioid Analgesics for Chronic Pain” to accelerate safe and effective non-opioid treatments and to reduce prescription-related opioid misuse.

Same-day bilateral cataract surgery led to vision outcomes that were at least as good as those with delayed sequential procedures, with limited impact on most patients' daily activities, according to two separate studies. A retrospective analysis of 10,192 British patients showed that 85% achieved 20/20 vision following placement of multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) during immediate bilateral procedures, compared with 77% of patients who received the same type of IOLs during delayed sequential procedures.

In a new study, artificial intelligence matched and potentially exceeded the performance of gastroenterologists and conventional scoring in evaluating endoscopies of Crohn's disease patients. The results, published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, show a computer vision model that identified mucosal ulceration as accurately as physician reviewing videos, while also being strongly correlated with the most common endoscopic scoring system.

Passage of the No Surprises Act in 2020 reflected a consensus among stakeholders that consumers should be protected from certain surprise medical bills. The law targeted scenarios where consumers received emergency services in an in-network or out-of-network (OON) facility, and some services, such as radiology or anesthesiology, from OON providers at in-network facilities.
