The AMA strongly supports moves in Congress that would adjust Medicare physician payment to rise with the rate of practice-cost inflation while warning that Medicaid proposals in the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s budget-reconciliation text would add administrative complexity and lead to coverage interruptions that especially affect Americans with low incomes and those living in rural areas. In response to the budget-reconciliation text released Sunday night, AMA Executive Vice President and CEO James L. Madara, MD, wrote in strong support of section 44304 of the committee’s recommendations, which “provides the first Medicare physician payment update that is permanently built into baseline Medicare rates since the passage of the Medicare and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) in 2015.”

In this study, physicians frequently experienced incomplete team staffing. Working with an incompletely staffed team was associated with significantly greater odds of burnout, [intent to reduce clinical work hours], and [intent to leave one’s current organization (ITL)]. Given associations between ITL and attrition,6 our findings emphasize the importance of adequate staffing.

Momentum continues to build for fairer Medicare coinsurance rates across sites of care. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Bill Cassidy, MD (R-LA), introduced the Medicare Beneficiary Co-Pay Fairness Act of 2025 on May 15 in the Senate. ASCA strongly endorses this pivotal legislation, which mirrors a bill introduced in the House of Representatives just weeks prior on April 24 by Representatives Mike Kelly (R-PA), Robert Menendez Jr. (D-NJ), Troy Balderson (R-OH) and John Larson (D-CT). Cataract surgery does not appear to increase the risk of POE or serious systemic adverse events in diabetic patients across all HbA1c levels. These findings suggest that HbA1c alone should not be a reason to defer cataract surgery and highlight the need for individualized risk assessments to determine surgical fitness.
