Ambulatory surgery centers, or ASCs for short, are rising in popularity by offering surgical, diagnostic and preventive procedures without the need for an overnight hospital stay. Also referred to as outpatient surgery centers, same-day surgery centers or surgicenters, these facilities are becoming an attractive alternative to going to the hospital for their convenience and lower costs.

As leaders of the healthcare delivery team, physicians play a decisive role in maintaining and enhancing the quality of care patients receive in medical offices, hospitals, urgent care centers, government facilities, community health centers and other sites of service nationwide. Each year, physicians handle approximately 1.3 billion patient encounters at medical offices and hospital emergency rooms throughout the county, at a rate of 4.3 physician visits per person, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The ASCA Nominating Committee is currently accepting nominations for the ASCA Board of Directors. There are five open positions. Candidates must hold leadership positions within an ASC or ASC management company. Those selected to serve are expected to attend at least three board meetings per year and participate in ASCA’s National Advocacy Day event. In this retrospective multi-institutional study, patients who underwent surgery immediately preceding the weekend had a significantly increased risk of complications, readmissions, and mortality compared with those treated after the weekend. Further study is needed to understand differences in care that may underpin these observations and ensure that patients receive high-quality care regardless of the day of the week.
