Draft recommendation - The Congress should: For calendar year 2026, replace the current-law updates to Medicare payment rates for physician and other health professional services with a single update equal to the projected increase in the Medicare Economic Index minus 1 percentage point; and enact the Commission’s March 2023 recommendation to establish
safety-net add-on payments under the physician fee schedule for services delivered to low-income Medicare beneficiaries.

The Federal Trade Commission today announced a settlement with private equity firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson, and Stowe and its affiliates that resolves a potential second, administrative antitrust case against Welsh Carson. According to the complaint, the Commission alleges Welsh Carson, through its portfolio company U.S. Anesthesia Partners, engaged in anticompetitive acquisitions to suppress competition and drive up prices for anesthesiology services across Texas.

After surgery, pain is expected and often subsides within a few weeks. But for around 20% of patients, persistent pain may continue for months or even years after a procedure, impacting quality of life and putting patients at risk for opioid overuse. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have received nearly $5 million from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health to support research aimed at identifying the factors responsible for differences in chronic post-surgical pain.
