President Donald Trump signed an executive order on drug prices Monday before departing the White House for a four-day trip to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Trump’s order includes pressuring foreign governments to pay more to pharmaceutical companies for their medications and expecting those companies to voluntarily lower their prices in the United States.

On this week’s audio update, ASCA Director of Government Affairs Stephen Abresch discusses new federal legislation that would substantially benefit ASCs and their Medicare patients. Currently, when a Medicare beneficiary receives treatment in an ASC, they are responsible for 20 percent of their cost of care, with no limit on the amount of their copay. However, when a Medicare beneficiary receives identical care in a hospital outpatient department, their copay is capped at the hospital inpatient deductible amount, which is $1,676 for 2025. A 20-year initiative by Kaiser Permanente Northern California that assessed colorectal cancer (CRC) screening status and offered flexible options for screening has made a huge difference in CRC incidence, deaths, and racial disparities, an analysis showed. “The program promptly doubled the proportion of people up to date with screening,” reported lead investigator Douglas A. Corley, MD, PhD, AGAF, a research scientist with Kaiser’s Division of Research, at a press briefing held on April 24, ahead of a presentation at the Digestive Disease Week 2025.

A 25% U.S. tariff on pharmaceutical imports would increase U.S. drug costs by nearly $51 billion annually, boosting U.S. prices by as much as 12.9% if passed on, a report commissioned by the industry's U.S. trade group and reviewed by Reuters shows. The analysis, conducted by Ernst & Young, found the United States imported $203 billion in pharmaceutical products in 2023, with 73% coming from Europe -- primarily Ireland, Germany and Switzerland.
