U.S. adults with private insurance are anxious and frustrated about getting and paying for the care they need through their health plan. One of patients’ main concerns is uncertainty about whether their insurer will cover a health procedure or prescription drug that their doctor says they need, particularly for a serious medical condition.

ASCA is looking for members to get a head start in participating in this year’s Member Appreciation Week, which takes place August 3-7. The Federal Trade Commission took action to protect American patients from higher outpatient surgery costs by requiring national nonprofit health system Ascension Health Alliance to divest several surgery center facilities to complete its proposed $3.9 billion acquisition of AmSurg LLC. Ascension’s acquisition of AmSurg, a subsidiary of Ambulatory Topco LLC, would combine two providers of outpatient surgical services, which range from cataract surgeries to colonoscopies.

A federal judge on Monday vacated a Trump administration requirement that employers pay a $100,000 fee on new H-1B visa applications, ruling that the policy was unlawful. The challenge had been brought by 20 blue state attorneys general back in December against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which had issued the rule implementing the elevated fee, arguing that the executive branch was attempting to "rewrite immigration law."

Two physician associate groups have sued the Trump administration over a federal rule limiting student loan borrowing for some graduate degree programs that impact healthcare professionals, including physician associates and assistants, nurse practitioners and other clinical providers. The American Academy of Physician Associates and the Physician Associates Education Association filed a lawsuit aimed at reversing a Department of Education regulation that the plaintiffs claim violates the Administrative Procedure Act.

ASCA Board Member Jon Van Valkenburg, CASC, executive director of Upstate Orthopedics ASC in East Syracuse, New York, will represent ASCs at the New York State Public Health and Health Planning Council. Governor Kathy Hochul appointed and the New York State Senate confirmed Van Valkenburg to the seat last week.

As part of an escalating set of immigration restrictions, the US federal government enacted a complete ban on immigration from 19 countries on December 2, 2025. Prior research has examined the relationship between targeted immigration policies, such as travel bans and H-1B visa fee hikes, and the US physician workforce.
