ASCA White Paper Explores Health IT Use in Surgery Centers

September 5, 2025

Alexandria, VA—The Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (ASCA) has published an updated white paper that outlines the state of health information technology (health IT) and electronic health record (EHR) technology use in the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) community. The white paper updates a previous white paper on the same topic published in August 2020.

“As requirements related to electronic health information expand, policymakers need to be aware of the unique circumstances of technology implementation in surgery centers,” said ASCA Chief Advocacy Officer Kara Newbury. “This updated white paper can serve as a foundation for policymaking, with the goals of expanding EHR use in ASCs while avoiding burdensome regulations that would reduce patient access to surgical services.”

In a recent ASCA survey of 280 surgery centers, 76 percent of facilities reported using an EHR, up from 64 percent in 2023. However, response bias in the survey likely overstates EHR penetration across all 6,500 Medicare-certified facilities.
