Federal regulators have delayed a major overhaul of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Security Rule, pushing back final action on the rule by a year. The Department of Health and Human Services had proposed a May 2026 release for a final rule that makes significant changes to the HIPAA Security Rule and marks the first major update to the 23-year-old rule in more than 10 years.

On July 2, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released the 2027 proposed payment rule for ASCs and hospital outpatient departments. On a positive note, CMS proposed to vastly expand the ASC Covered Procedures List and continue to align the ASC update factor with the one used to update HOPD payments. Gov. Josh Green on Wednesday signed House Bill 1969, a measure aimed at removing financial barriers to colorectal cancer screenings and treatment in Hawaii. The law requires health insurance plans to cover follow-up colonoscopies after a positive screening test without deductibles, copays or other out-of-pocket costs.

Vermont patients now have increased access to safe anesthesia care. The state is the latest to opt out of federal regulations that require physician supervision of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. With Gov. Phil Scott's letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on July 2, Vermont becomes the 26th state to opt-out of physician supervision.

The Washington Trust Company has provided $75.6 million in construction-to-permanent financing for a newly completed orthopedic ambulatory surgery center and medical office building in Waltham, marking a significant investment in expanding outpatient orthopedic care across Greater Boston. The 79,500-square-foot facility, located at 71 Border Road, opened in June 2026 following a total project investment of approximately $105 million.

Jason M. Cuéllar, M.D., performed the first surgical procedure at the newly opened Disc Surgery Center at Palm Beach in West Palm Beach, Florida, on June 25, marking an important milestone for both the new ASC and Cuéllar Spine, according to a release. The opening expands the ASC’s surgical capabilities while advancing Cuéllar’s vision of delivering state-of-the-art, motion-preserving and minimally invasive spine care in a specialized outpatient setting.
