Facing a fifth consecutive year of Medicare payment reductions, the American Medical Association (AMA) issued a clarion call today to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), urging the agency to be fully transparent about the impact of these payment cuts on physicians and patients. CMS proposed in July a payment reduction of 2.8%. CMS also estimated that the Medicare Economic Index (MEI)—the agency’s measure of practice cost inflation—will increase by 3.6%.

The California legislature passed AB 3129 late Saturday night, the last day of the legislative session. The final bill included some amendments in the final days of the legislative session that carved out certain types of transactions and health care providers from the scope of the bill. If signed by Governor Newsom, AB 3129 will require notice and, in some instances, consent of the California Attorney General or certain investments by private equity groups and hedge funds in the California health care industry beginning on January 1, 2025.
