Stryker said Thursday it has agreed to acquire Vertos Medical, an Aliso Viejo, California-based company whose minimally invasive technology treats chronic lower back pain, for an undisclosed sum. The Vertos procedure, which can be performed in an outpatient setting, is designed to provide pain relief for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis by restoring space in the spinal canal and reducing nerve compression.

Under Medicare, a plethora of policies directly correlate to whether the patient or provider is located in an urban or rural area when the service is delivered. These policies range from rules that limit coverage of telehealth services to encounters where the patient is located in a rural area (a restriction that has been waived since 2020 but will go back into effect when the waiver expires at the end of this year) to specific hospital designations (e.g., critical access hospital, rural health clinics, rural emergency hospitals).

Employers are actively seeking out alternatives to curb rising health benefit costs by sidestepping traditional carriers, a new report from Brighton Health Plan Solutions shows. Of the 150 health benefit respondents cited for the report, 75% said they are actively having conversations about direct contracting.
