An increasing number of tissue-cutting ablations that inevitably generate smoke may pose risks to healthcare personnel, according to new research presented at Digestive Disease Week 2024. “While surgeons in the operating room have regulations and guidelines to mitigate smoke exposure, there are no comparable rules for gastrointestinal endoscopy,” explained principal investigator Christopher Thompson, MD, the director of endoscopy at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston.

The Justice Department today announced the 2024 National Health Care Fraud Enforcement Action, which resulted in criminal charges against 193 defendants, including 76 doctors, nurse practitioners, and other licensed medical professionals in 32 federal districts across the United States, for their alleged participation in various health care fraud schemes involving approximately $2.75 billion in intended losses and $1.6 billion in actual losses. In connection with the coordinated nationwide law enforcement action, and together with federal and state law enforcement partners, the government seized over $231 million in cash, luxury vehicles, gold, and other assets.

The Colorectal Cancer Alliance's 45+ Reasons, a campaign to get more than 5,000 Black Philadelphians ages 45-75 screened for colorectal cancer to reduce their significantly higher mortality, is partnering with Blake Gastroenterology Associates, LLC, Gaudenzia Addiction Treatment & Recovery Services, and the Penn Medicine Population Health team to expand the campaign's reach in neighborhoods across Philadelphia. "We're excited to broaden the 45+ Reasons campaign reach within the community through partnerships with prominent healthcare partners who can meet individuals where they are," said Kimberly McNeil, prevention project director at the Colorectal Cancer Alliance.
