A recent study by the nonprofit Physicians for a Healthy California reveals a growing number of minority female doctors are feeling burned out and leaving their field of work. Lupe Alonzo-Diaz, the president and CEO of Physicians For a Healthy California, said that nearly half — 47% — of all women physicians of color said they felt burnout and were concerned about their wellbeing.

Florida has become the first state to allow doctors to perform cesarean sections outside of hospitals, siding with a private equity-owned physicians group that says the change will lower costs and give pregnant women the homier birthing atmosphere that many desire. But the hospital industry and the nation’s leading obstetricians’ association say that even though some Florida hospitals have closed their maternity wards in recent years, performing C-sections in doctor-run clinics will increase the risks for women and babies when complications arise.

The Physicians Advocacy Institute (PAI) warned federal officials that health care consolidation is negatively impacting the quality and affordability of health care at a time when cost is a major concern. In a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission and Department of Health and Human Services, PAI called on the Administration to do more to protect patients and physicians from corporate entities’ anticompetitive practices.

In the first three months of 2024, there were 323 active drug shortages, the highest number since 2001, according to research by the University of Utah Drug Information Service. The drug shortage data, collected quarterly, is generated from reports from health-care professionals, most of them pharmacists at hospitals and health systems, said Erin Fox, the lead researcher and the Drug Information Service’s director.

Covenant High Plains Surgery Center announced today that it has earned ACS Surgical Quality Partner designation from the American College of Surgeons as a result of its accreditation by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. This accreditation is normally the domain of hospital programs, and fewer than two dozen surgery centers in the nation have merited the designation.
