More than one in four ransomware attacks in healthcare impact patient care, according to a new survey out this week from advisory firm Software Advice. About half of healthcare organizations that experienced a ransomware attack said the breach impacted patient data — and 34% said they failed to recover the data after the attack.

The 2024 MGMA Provider Compensation and Production report “Provider Pay and the Dawn of a New Era of Productivity” — reflecting 2023 data from more than 211,000 physicians and advanced practice providers — illustrates the new economic landscape facing healthcare providers: Inflation has cooled, but the demand for high-quality care has not, with most specialties posting year-over-year work RVU increases beyond the surging productivity levels recorded in 2021 and 2022.

The Generics Access Project and 46 patient advocacy organizations sent a letter on May 21 to the Senate HELP and House Energy & Commerce leadership to stress the urgent need for congressional action to alleviate the worsening drug shortage crisis. GAP noted that a record high of 323 prescription medicines — the majority of which are affordable, generic medicines — are currently in shortage.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) today announced the launch of its new wellness initiative SafeHaven, a program created by clinicians for clinicians, offering personalized assistance to help combat stress and burnout. ASA, in partnership with the ASA Charitable Foundation and VITAL WorkLife, the leading mental health and well-being expert for health care organizations and their workforces, are providing the resource to anesthesiologists at a time when reports of physician burnout are at an all-time high.

A conversational artificial intelligence patient navigator was successful at re-engaging patients in colonoscopy screening, essentially doubling the colonoscopy completion rate in patients from underserved communities who had previously missed or avoided an appointment, a new analysis found. Colorectal cancer (CRC) disparities among people of color in the United States are well documented, Alyson Moadel, PhD, told the audience during a press briefing ahead of a presentation at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2024 annual meeting.

Cases of whooping cough are on the rise across the United States, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows. There have been at least 4,864 whooping cough cases reported this year, nearly three times higher than the 1,746 cases reported at the same time last year.

ASCA, in partnership with the Louisiana Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (LASCA), opposed Louisiana HB 863, which proposed a new workers’ compensation reimbursement schedule in the state. ASCA and LASCA’s advocacy paid off, and earlier this month, the sponsor of HB 863, Representative Michael Echols, requested to defer the bill in the state’s Senate Committee on Labor and Industrial Relations.
