In this systematic review and meta-analysis including 81 studies and more than 24.9 million patients, nearly half of individuals with [early-onset colorectal cancer] presented with hematochezia and abdominal pain and one-quarter presented with altered bowel habits. Delays in diagnosis of 4 to 6 months from time of initial presentation were common.

The U.S. Food and Administration last week qualified the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s patient-reported outcome measure for premium intraocular lenses (IOLs) as a Medical Device Development Tool. The designation allows medical device sponsors to use the Academy’s Assessment of IntraOcular Lens Implant Symptoms (AIOLIS) to clinically evaluate patients’ perception of visual disturbances following premium IOL cataract surgery.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed into law Senate Bill 1720/House Bill 2451, a vital patient protection measure that prevents the misleading use of medical specialty titles, including “anesthesiologist” and “anesthesiology” by unqualified individuals. The American Society of Anesthesiologists and Tennessee Society of Anesthesiologists applaud this action, which will protect patients in Tennessee from titles that mispresent a health care professional’s true expertise.

Three more states—Minnesota, Virginia and West Virginia—have adopted surgical smoke evacuation requirements for ASCs and hospitals in the 2024 legislative session. Pushed at the state level primarily by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), the issue has seen sustained interest since Rhode Island enacted the first requirement in 2018, with 14 other states following with their own laws in the six years since then. Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) is an achievement in the field of minimally invasive surgery. However, the vantage point of vaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (vNOTES) in gynecologicalprocedures remains unclear. The main purpose of this study was to compare vNOTES with laparo-endoscopic single-site surgery, and to determine which procedure is more suitable for ambulatory surgery in gynecologic procedures.
