To Stay or Not to Stay

Two of the biggest challenges in all aspects of ambulatory surgery, and particularly related to 23-hour stays, says Draves, are fear of the unknown and overcoming a “but we’ve always done it this way” mentality. As patients face higher deductibles and co-pays, she adds, ASCs need to think outside the box to maintain and grow their surgical volume.

“To Stay or Not to Stay” will involve participants in an interactive conversation that will explore overnight stay from every angle and cover critical topics including the benefits and the pitfalls of overnight stay for ASCs and their patients, keys to success, overcoming obstacles, designing and implementing a program especially suited to your ASC and more.

Barbara P. Draves, CASC, administrator of The Surgery Center in Cleveland, Ohio, has been an ASC administrator for 30 years. She is the current president of the Board of Ambulatory Surgery Certification (BASC) and serves on ASCA’s Education Committee. Draves is active in the Ohio Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (OAASC) and is part of the team established to develop quality reporting benchmarks for the state.

Draves’ overall expertise is in independently owned ASCs. Key roles that she has filled as an ASC administrator, in her words, include champion of quality patient care, strong advocate of physician relations and the “mom” of human resources. Through the years, Draves has been affiliated with some of the most recognized ASC management companies in the field, including Medical Care International, Hospital Corporation of America and United Surgical Partners International. She says that the shared knowledge that she accumulated from those early champions of ambulatory surgery has sustained her well through the years.
