Medicare's often-misunderstood inpatient-only list may soon be departing, as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed to eliminate it over the next three years, as outlined in the 2021 Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) Proposed Rule. First introduced 20 years ago, the list designates surgeries that require inpatient care because of the invasive nature of the procedure, the need for at least 24 hours of postoperative recovery time, or the underlying physical condition of the patient requiring the surgery.

Is the implementation of Medicaid expansion through the Affordable Care Act associated with changes in the use of outpatient general surgical care in states with expanded Medicaid coverage vs states without expanded Medicaid coverage? In this case-control study of 207,176 adult patients from 4 U.S. states, Medicaid expansion was associated with a 10 percent increase in outpatient laparoscopic cholecystectomies, a 26 percent increase in lumpectomies, and a 16 percent increase in laparoscopic hernia repairs; all of these increases were statistically significant.

The Hartford HealthCare group hopes to expand its offerings with a new ambulatory surgical center inside an existing facility in town. The healthcare group has applied for a certificate of need through the state’s Office of Health Strategy to bring the new outpatient medical service to the second floor of the Hartford HealthCare Family Medical Center.

The Vision Council’s 2019 VisionWatch Cataract Report conducted in December indicated that cataract procedures would increase annually over the next several years. The report measured changes in consumer behavior related to vision and vision correction after cataract surgery, the group said in a press release.
