There are just four days left to submit data for the first quarter (Q1) of ASCA’s 2020 Clinical & Operational Benchmarking Survey. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Q1 data submission period has been extended through this Sunday, May 31.

New to this year’s survey are specialty-specific questions about total knee/hip/shoulder replacement procedures as well as complex spine procedures. In addition, the survey now meets AAAHC’s Advanced Orthopaedic Certification requirements as a nationally recognized specialty-specific data repository. Submit your data or subscribe to the survey today.

As a reminder, the attestation deadline for healthcare providers that wish to keep the grants the US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) began distributing April 10 was extended from 30 to 45 days. Sign the attestation via the attestation portal on the Provider Relief Fund page. For providers that received payment on April 10, for example, the deadline was extended from May 9 to May 24.

An estimated 28 million elective surgeries have been postponed during the COVID-19 pandemic and response worldwide, according to a study published in the British Journal of Surgery. Giana Davidson, a general surgeon at the University of Washington Medical Center, partnered with the team of surgeons that conducted the study.

Outpatient surgery centers specializing in everything from ankles to eyes are reopening in Central New York. Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists announced that it will resume elective procedures Tuesday at its one-day surgery center on East Taft Road in Cicero.

Current guidelines recommend a 10-year interval between screening colonoscopies, but evidence is limited. Researchers have found in a new study that having a single negative high-quality screening colonoscopy was associated with reduced colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and mortality (by 84 percent and 90 percent, respectively) for up to 17.4 years.

The Red Cross called for an end to cyberattacks on healthcare and medical research facilities during the coronavirus pandemic, in a letter published Tuesday and signed by a group of political and business figures. Such attacks endanger human lives and governments must take "immediate and decisive action" to stop them, the letter stated.
