Update on Risk of Cross-Contamination From 24-Hour Multi-Patient Use Endoscope Connectors

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is issuing this letter to announce the FDA clearance of a modified Erbe USA Inc. (Erbe) ERBEFLO port connector designed to help reduce the risk of cross-contamination that was identified in FDA's April 18, 2018 Letter to Health Care Providers and Staff at Health Care Facilities. The design of the modified ERBEFLO 24-hour use port connector added a backflow prevention feature as recommended in FDA guidance.

The Joint Commission Issues Quick Safety Advisory on Disinfection of Tonometers and Other Ophthalmology Devices

The transmission of serious viruses including adnovirus, HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) could occur from failure to adequately disinfect ophthalmology devices such as tonometers, according to a report from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). AAO's report, coupled with additional data compiled by The Joint Commission, identifies an immediate threat to patients' health and safety. Joint Commission data reveals significant unawareness or misinterpretation by health care organizations of manufacturers' instructions on how to disinfect ophthalmology devices, as well as a noted decrease in these organizations’ commitment to train staff to disinfect the devices.

FDA Labels Ethicon Surgical Staplers Recall as Class I

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has labelled a recall of circular staplers by Johnson & Johnson unit Ethicon as Class I, or high risk. Initiated last month, the recall involved a total of 92,496 Endo-Surgery Curved and Endo-Surgery Endoscopic Curved Intraluminal Staplers designed to enable creation of connections between structures in surgical procedures.

Frailty Screening After Surgery May Decrease Complications, Readmissions

Screening for frailty may decrease unplanned readmissions and complications after elective outpatient surgery, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open. "Frailty is a syndrome of increased vulnerability to a stressor, which can disrupt physiological homeostasis and degrade health status," Kara A. Rothenberg, MD, of the Stanford-Surgery Policy Improvement Research and Education Center and the department of surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine, and colleagues wrote.

OrthoCarolina and Compass Surgical Partners to Open New, Physician-Owned Surgery Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

A partnership including a group of local surgeons and Compass Surgical Partners have received a Certificate of Need from the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation Certificate of Need Section to develop an ambulatory surgery center in Winston-Salem. The partnership includes OrthoCarolina, its physicians local to Winston-Salem, and additional independent ophthalmologists and pain management specialists.
