On December 21, 2018, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a correction notice to the 2019 OPPS/ASC final rule. ASCA has updated the rate calculator and other members-only payment resources to reflect CMS changes to payment indicators and corrections to multiple procedure discounting errors. Please make sure you use these updated rate documents for all services. Read on.

Specialists continue to draw bigger paychecks than primary care physicians, with orthopedic salaries at the top of the list, according to a new survey. Orthopedic doctors had the highest salary among 25 types of physicians, according to a MedPage Today salary survey.

Association Between Postoperative Opioid Use and Outpatient Surgical Adverse Events

In view of the common occurrence of opioid-related adverse drug events following inpatient surgical procedures, researchers determined opioid prescribing after outpatient surgical procedures and its influence on short-term risks of outpatient surgical adverse events (AEs). They used VA Corporate Data Warehouse to identify opioid use within 48 hours for FY2012-14 chart-reviewed cases from a larger VA study of AEs in outpatient surgeries.

Medicare's Bundled Payment Experiment for Joint Replacements Shows Moderate Savings

Medicare's randomized trial of a new bundled payment model for hip and knee replacement surgeries led to $812 in savings per procedure, or a 3.1 percent reduction in costs, when compared with traditional means of paying for care, according to new research from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School. The study found that the bundled payment model was also associated with a reduction in use of skilled nursing care after the hospitalization, but had no effects on complication rates among patients.

Outpatient Centers on the Rise as Average Asking Rent for U.S. Medical Office Buildings Reaches Record High

The U.S. outpatient care center sector has grown robustly in recent years as asking rents for medical office buildings continue to rise and health systems seek to provide a better patient experience at a lower cost, according to a new report from CBRE. The U.S. average asking rent reached its highest level on record in Q2 2018, rising 1.4 percent year-over-year to $22.90 per sq. ft., due to tight market conditions and the completion of new, high-quality space.
