The New Jersey Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (NJAASC) has sponsored a scholarship that will support one of One World Surgery's weeklong surgical missions to Honduras, October 13–20, 2018. Over the course of that week, the mission team expects to perform 60 surgeries on patients who otherwise would not have access to high-quality surgical care in Honduras. As a follow-up to last week’s Government Affairs Update, on October 3, both chambers of Congress passed the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act (H.R. 6) to help improve the opioid epidemic. In a press release from the US House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee, Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) and Health Subcommittee Chairman Mike Burgess, MD (R-TX) stated that “while there is still much work to be done, this historic effort will undoubtedly save lives and put families and communities across our country on the road to recovery.” Read more.

Outpatient Joint Replacement and Achieving The Triple Aim

Patient outcomes demonstrate that outpatient joint replacement (OJR) provides an alternative site of care for patients suffering from chronic osteoarthritis. With the Triple Aim Objectives of healthcare reform firmly planted at the forefront of the national debate, OJR has been less costly than joint replacement performed in an inpatient hospital setting for our practice. By streamlining care in the outpatient setting, and contracting with local insurance providers with a bundled offering, Excelsior Orthopaedics decreased the top line reimbursement for total joints from approximately $38,000 to $26,000.

Cleveland Clinic First in U.S. to Use Single-Incision Robotic Surgery

Urologic surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic are the first in the country to successfully perform prostate surgery using a new generation of robot that inserts surgical instruments through a small incision. Surgeons used the Single Port SP Robot from Intuitive Surgical to remove cancerous prostates as well as an enlarged prostate blocking the urinary system through the bladder.

CMS to Strengthen Oversight of Medicare's Accreditation Organizations

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) took action to improve quality and safety in healthcare facilities and empower patients with information to make decisions about where to receive care. "Today we are taking action to improve our oversight of Accrediting Organizations, including by increasing transparency for patients on the organizations' performance," said CMS Administrator Seema Verma.

North Carolina State Health Coordinating Council Votes on Proposed 2019 State Medical Facilities Plan

On October 3, 2018, North Carolina’s health planning body, the State Health Coordinating Council (SHCC), met in Raleigh to finalize its work on the document that will define health care opportunities in North Carolina for the year to come. Study at Johns Hopkins Hospital Leads to Changes in Reporting Patient Safety Concerns

In a case study published online last week in Academic Medicine, an international team of researchers led by the University of Cambridge and Johns Hopkins Medicine looked at what prevented employees from raising concerns. The study identifies measures to help health care organizations encourage their employees to speak up and recommends a systematic approach to promoting employee voice that appears to have already made a positive impact at Johns Hopkins.
